Safety in thunderstorms
Safety in thunderstorms isn’t something we are always concerned about during this day and age. Simply because we are normally within shelter when one seems to roll around. However, that isn’t to say that we shouldn’t understand how to protect ourselves during a thunder storm. Just in case we are caught outside during one.
The first rule to being safe during a thunderstorm is to understand that lighting can be and is deadly. If you are able to stay indoors, do! This is the best way to avoid a deadly strike of lightning during a thunder storm.
After the basic rule of staying indoors is met; there are a few more rules of thumb to remember.
- Unplug your television and electronics.
- Do not use your telephone! Electricity can travel through it to you.
- Watch and be alert for any high winds.
- Stay out of water! Including showers or baths.
- If you are out and about in a bad thunder storm, stay in your vehicle.
- Never stand under a tree or near one.
- Never touch downed power lines! Once the thunder storm is over alert the authorities and power company of the downed line.
