Nuclear power plant emergency
A nuclear power plant emergency isn’t something you think about every day. However, if you are within range of the power plant; it is important to stay prepared in the case of an emergency. First and foremost you should have an evacuation plan. Whether it is to go to a friend or a family member’s home; there should always be a safe place for you to meet your family.
Once you are told to evacuate you should always remember to keep your vehicle’s windows and vents closed. Using re-circulating air to prevent any contaminated air from flowing into your car. However, on the flip-side of that coin; if you are ever told to stay indoors turn off any air conditioning. If you are able take yourself and your family into your basement or an underground room. Do not use a telephone unless it is necessary. This may cause un-needed problems in the case of a power plant emergency.
If there is ever any concern that you have been exposed to radiation; change your clothing, putting it into a plastic bag. Once you have done this; place it out of the way while sealed. After which you will then take a shower as soon as possible to minimize any effect that it may have.
There are many things you will need to do to keep yourself safe in a nuclear power plant emergency. The best place to start is by knowing your local area and the location of power plants. |
