Dam failure

Dam failure is something that anyone living close to one is concerned about. Whether it is caused by man-made error or a natural disaster; the possibility for un-told damage is very real. But, what exactly is dam failure? How does a dam fail? Why does a dam fail?
There are many different reasons that a dam could fail. From a spillway design error, change of the surrounding mountain, geological instability, poor maintenance, human or computer design error, and extreme rainfall. Not to mention the possibility of many more natural disasters.
Unfortunately, there is no real way to stop dam failure or to prepare for it. However, it is possible to have a plan in place in case a dam does fail. If you live in the way of a dam; always have a place to go in the case of dam failure! Whether it is a friends, family members home, or a safe  place such as a Red Cross designated area.
